The world has its hair on fire over the poor Palestinian peple. Big bad Israel is to blame but there seems no mention of the real issues involved but as usual and like Charlie Brown in the Peanuts cartoon, the US is the fall-guy.
Arab countries meetin in a Ryadh Summit are accusing the West of hypocrisy for quickly denouncing Russia’s violation of international law while not denouncing Israel for the same crime. That ignores the fact that Arab countries have turned a blind eye to Russia violating Ukraine for three years while they were instantly ready to pounce on Israel and the US well within a month. Those dynamics were all fanned by the global social media capable of turning a global crowd into a mob with a few well-placed posts conflating incendiary issues.
The underdog Palestine is a shoo-in for bleeding heart elite liberals in the West looking for a cause to warrant pent-up rage over achanges in a global world beyond their understanding. The global south is glad to hitch a ride on their coat-tails, in part as qwlcome vengeance for injustices suffered throughout history due to western dominance. Now deposed from their lofty perch as world domineers, the western powers around the elephant in the room.
Israel was established as a result of historic anti-Semism culminating in the Holocaust of World War II. The land for the new state was ceded by former colonialist Great Britain with no address of what was to happen to the semi-nomadic Palestinian people living there. Hence, the world has a most pecular situation where crossroads oh concerns form a turnstile.
As a refuge for a perennial global underdog, Israel has a preponderance of western support. Among others, it is a gateway to Arab countries that remain a mystery to much of the west. And a bane of the whole enterprise is that some Arab countries don’t believe Israel has the right to exist.
In wake of the brutal Hamas attack onIsrael and Israel’s monstrous retaliatory response, debate has raged over Israel’s disproportionate, irrational response and providing relief to Palestinians in the fallout from Israeli rage. None of it makes sense. If Hamas is operating in tunnels, why is there such a great need for airstrikes over supposed human shields? And why are the Palestinian people still so vulnerable that a terrorist group can use them as human shields? Those are messaging issues and they are social media mob-control tools that Ukraine teavhes the world in its defense against Russian absurdities.
Like the American Midwesterners known for their straight-forward plain talk, Ukraine is is incisive with its simplicity. “These are our borders. We want Russia out of them.” “I need ammo, not a ride.”
In all the Summits abd diplomatic jockeying, it has never become clear which countries still do not accept the fact that Israel has a right to be a state. Take a poll of that and you may get more sympathy for Israel.
Honesty goes a long way in a frazzled global digital age. An honest statement of position let the content be assessed. It triggers assessment mechanisms and leads to resolution by means other than by armed conflict. So, if honesty can be achieved in the Arab Summit going on now and in the meeting of 40 Pacific nations including China and the US next week, two stivky wickets of shifting geopolitics may be unstuck in one swoop.
Russia is a ghost presence at both these meetings, never far through its invisible networks from any potential hornet’s nest. If the case can be made forthe senseless cause behind its illrgal and destructive attack on Ukraine, it may consent to giving up pursuit of its aims. Then Ukraine will be free to give Israel pointers on how to bring about justice without causing the world to set its hair on fire.
